STUDIO LANCELOT

INDEPENDENT DESIGNER 2021

Within the intersections of cultural attitudes and movement science, Boris Lancelot specialises in design alternatives that allow the body to move towards optimised physical fitness and well-being. Combining his knowledge in physical exercise and body conscious design, Lancelot has teamed up with movement scientists Dr. John van der Kamp (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) and Dr. Simone Caljouw (UMCG, University of Groningen).
In 2019, the team initiated a research collaboration to verify that the stools in the ‘Active Classroom’ collection indeed invite more postural changes than the conventual chair.
This project received funding from Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie, and was shortlisted for the DEZEEN Awards 2020. The ‘Active Classroom’ presents a collection of four stools designed for primary school children, based on a new sitting philosophy that focuses on postural change. Lancelot aims to further develop this active sitting concept to help Western culture embrace a healthier sitting habitus, starting in schools.

ARCHER

The ‘Active Classroom’ is a series of ergonomic children’s furniture designed for the school of the future.

ROM/RIDER/SCOUT/ARCHER

A diverse alternative to the deep and unhealthy habituation in chair sitting, the four stools encourage a frequent alternation of different postures to increase muscular diversity.

ARCHER

The ‘Active Classroom’ takes a unique perspective, arguing that sitting is an activity where the ‘change of postures’ is the essential ingredient.

ROM

Children were chosen, because they are more flexible and receptive for transitioning to new sitting behaviors and adopt a greater variety of postures with ease.
